Learn the Basics and start improving your credit today!
The first thing you should do is to request your credit report from each of the major credit reporting agencies.
You are allowed one free copy of your credit report every year from each of the big three credit bureaus -
TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax.
Review the information in those credit reports carefully.
Note any information that is incorrect in any way - dates, amounts, addresses, names, etc.
All errors are potential reasons to challenge negative items on your reports.
Write to the credit bureaus and dispute each incorrect item.
If you do not hear back, write again to followup.
If you get revised reports sent back to you, carefully review them to see if the items were actually removed.
In many cases, the creditor will not have replied back in the specified amount of time and the credit bureau will simply remove the disputed item as you request!
